teamed up for their first AVP victory as partners and Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson secured their fourth straight tournament victory.
Ross and Gibb each won the Santa Barbara Open for the second consecutive year, though both did so with new partners.
Walsh Jennings, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and Ross, a 2012 Olympic silver medalist, teamed up for the first time on the AVP this week in Santa Barbara, and the top seeds rolled to a 21-18, 21-10 victory over third-seeded Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat in Sunday’s final.
Gibb, a two-time Olympian, and Patterson were also seeded first, and the pair beat fourth-seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-19 in the final Sunday.
Gibb and Patterson have won AVP tournaments this year in Atlantic City; Cincinnati; St. Petersburg, Fla. and Santa Barbara. They’ll go for five in a row next month when they play in the AVP Huntington Beach Open Oct. 17-20.
Walsh Jennings and Ross swept all five opponents in the Santa Barbara Open. Gibb and Patterson took a more difficult path. They swept their first two opponents, but then lost to Bourne and Hyden in the winners’ bracket quarterfinals of the double-elimination tournament. They then swept 14th-seedded Russ Marchewka and Derek Olson in the contenders’ bracket quarterfinals and beat seventh-seeded Adrian Carambula and Stafford Slick, 21-18, 22-20 in the semis to set up a rematch with Bourne and Hyden.
