COSTA MESA, CALIF. (Nov. 19, 2013) – The AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) Pro Beach Volleyball Tour announced its year-end award winners today, recognizing the top performers from the 2013 season.
It was the spring of 2009 when Ryan Doherty and good friend Steve Johnson decided to head a half hour south to the casinos of Atlantic City, N.J., for a guys' night out.
In the midst of the drive, Doherty dropped a bombshell.
"We're driving down the parkway, and Ryan says, 'Hopefully I can win a couple of bucks. I'm moving out to California tomorrow,'" Johnson said. "I was like, 'What?! Are you crazy?!'"
Vanuatu's highly successful women's beach volleyball team has been forced to withdraw from upcoming European tours because of a lack of funds.
Vanuatu is the highest ranked Oceania team and teams just finished 5th and 6th at the Asian Beach Championship.
With casualty and fatality reports still mounting, the devastating scale of the destruction left by Typhoon Haiyan is becoming all-too-apparent. At the AVP, we’d like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the estimated 4.5 million people who have been affected by this disaster. We wish to offer not only our deepest sympathy, but also our support to the victims. Like everyone, we’ve been strongly affected by the images of destruction we’ve seen in the media. And with the Philippines being one of the top countries in the region for beach volleyball, our connection feels very personal. In particular, Cebu, one of the hardest hit areas, is known for producing top beach volleyball athletes. Yet at times like these, sport takes a back seat. There are people in the Philippines who are suffering and need help. We strongly encourage everyone in the AVP community to demonstrate their support for the people who have been devastated by Typhoon Haiyan by donating to relief organizations like the Philippine Red Cross or the World Food Program.Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
