Kabul, Afghanistan, April 11, 2013 – Beach volleyball is experiencing major growth in Afghanistan, where more beach courts are being built and players are travelling to compete internationally.
Just years after players were limited to national play, beach volleyball in the country is getting a boost, with help from the FIVB's Volleyball Cooperation Programme (VCP) and the leadership of President of the Afghan Volleyball Federation (AVF), Dr. Mohammad Yonus Imal Popalzay.
People looking to rekindle the Olympic spirit are being offered the chance to take part in a special beach volleyball open day next weekend.
Barn Elms, in Rocks Lane, now boasts four beach volleyball courts which have been created using 1,000 tonnes of sand from last summer's Olympic venue in Horseguard's parade.
Wandsworth Council secured the sand to provide a long-lasting Olympic legacy for the borough, as part of a £45,000 project funded by Volleyball England and Sport England.

Many of the top AVP athletes are gearing up to represent the USA in a pair of international competitions in China at the end of April.
USA Volleyball has entered six women’s and four men’s teams in this year’s opening round of FIVB Open Beach Volleyball competition, which is set to take place April 23-28 in Fuzhou, China.
Teams representing the USA will go into the Fuzhou Open with a heavy AVP presence on both the women’s and men’s side.Read more...
Kerri Walsh Jennings Announces the Start of the 2013 AVP Season on the Today Show. AVP Announces Location!
Costa Mesa, CA - Olympic beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings appeared on NBC’s Today Show this morning, and announced that the kick-off event for the 2013 AVP Professional Beach Volleyball Tour will take place August 17. Though she did not mention the location, the AVP is excited to announce that Salt Lake City will be hosting the first event of the 30th Anniversary Tour August 17 and 18.
The three-time gold medalist, who last weekend welcomed the arrival of her daughter Scout Margery Jennings, is just one of the high profile star players who is excited for the 2013 AVP Pro Season. Sãeback from two sets down in the Brazilian Women’s Superliga Final to win the crown for the eighth time on Sunday. The team from Rio beat out rivals and FIVB club world champions Sollys/Nestlé (SP) 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-9) in a match that lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in São Paulo.
Brazilian star Natalia and Canadian Sarah Pavan top scored for Unilever with 22 points each while Sollys / Nestle’s Sheilla recorded 17. Unilever’s setter Fofão, received the VivaVôlei trophy after the game for her courageous play having played on in spite of an injury in her right calf.
