Jake Gibb never thought it would happen.
Long before the Olympics and prior to become an international beach volleyball star, the Bountiful native looked back at his early days playing in small tournaments at Liberty Park. The idea that the AVP Tour would come to Salt Lake City was not even a dream.
Well, not only is the Association of Volleyball Professionals bringing an event to Utah, the three-day beach volleyball tournament at Liberty Park on Aug. 16-18 will kick off the 2013 AVP season, one that includes stops at California beaches in Huntington, Santa Barbara and Manhattan Beach.
As a titan in the sport of beach volleyball, Kerri Walsh Jennings stands tall—literally, as she is listed at 6'3"—as well as figuratively above the competition.

American men’s duo, Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb won the silver medal at the FIVB World Cup in Brazil, one day after U.S. women’s duo April Ross and Jen Kessy also took silver.
Ross and Kessy, who also captured the silver at last summer’s Olympic Games in London, lost the gold medal match to No. 1 seeded Brazilian duo of Maria Antonelli and Talita Da Rocha Antunes, 23-12, 21-12.
The first set was closely contested, but in the end Antonelli’s serves proved too much for the Americans to handle.
“We were having trouble setting Maria’s jump serves,” Ross said afterwards in an FIVB press release. “It was hard for me to push it up to the net. Certain conditions favor certain servers and I think Maria has a lot of topspin on her jump serves, so she was fine in these conditions.”Read more...
