NEW YORK and COSTA MESA, Calif. (July 14, 2015) – The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) announced today that the women’s open qualifying tournament for the inaugural AVP Kingston New York City Open will be held at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 beginning at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 16.

The women’s open qualifier will kick off a citywide celebration of beach volleyball, complete with panoramic views of Lower Manhattan, the New York Harbor, Governors Island, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The AVP Kingston New York City Open is the second tournament on the AVP’s 2015 schedule – the only stop in the Northeast – and brings the AVP Tour to Manhattan for the first time in the tour’s 33-year history. As previously announced, Thursday’s men’s open qualifier, as well as men’s and women’s main-draw play Friday-Sunday, will be held at Hudson River Park’s Pier 26/25 on Manhattan’s lower west side.

“Fans now have a picture-perfect opportunity to enjoy the AVP Kingston New York City Open in both Manhattan and Brooklyn,” said Donald Sun, the AVP’s managing partner. “From the open qualifying tournament at Brooklyn Bridge Park to main draw play at Hudson River Park, the scope of our first-ever Manhattan event is now city-wide”

Brooklyn Bridge Park will transform into a world-class beach volleyball venue for the qualifier with three courts alongside classic views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. An 85-acre sustainable waterfront park, Brooklyn Bridge Park stretches 1.3 miles along the East River shoreline.

The AVP Kingston New York City Open will feature 16 top men’s duos and 16 top women’s duos – including Olympians April Ross, Jen Kessy, Jake Gibb, Nicole Branagh and Todd Rogers, as well as a number of up-and coming stars and hopefuls for the 2016 Rio Olympics – competing in three days of main draw play at Hudson River Park’s Pier 26/25, and will be surrounded by a high-energy atmosphere complete with great food, drinks, music and interactive activities.

General admission to all four days of the AVP Kingston New York City Open is free, and VIP tickets for Friday-Sunday main-draw play are available at www.AVP.com. Media interested in covering the tournament can apply at https://avp.webconnex.com/NYCMedia.

The tournament finals will be broadcast live on NBC from 1:30-3 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 19. The AVP Kingston New York City Open is the second tournament on the AVP’s 2015 schedule, which also includes events in New Orleans; Seattle; Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Chicago; Cincinnati; and Huntington Beach, Calif. The AVP also hosted and operated an Olympic qualifying tournament on the FIVB World Tour in St. Petersburg, Fla. in June.
