The leadership team for AVPFirst is comprised of a Board of Directors, the Executive Director and a Director of Programs.  Together they provide the overall management and direction of the organization.  They were specifically chosen because of their unique nonprofit management experience, youth sports programming backgrounds, volleyball expertise and passion for the mission of the organization.

Tony Giarla

For the last 20 years Tony Giarla has committed himself to the profession of nonprofit management, sports and recreation. During that time he has held positions in minor league baseball, intercollegiate athletics and community based recreational level athletics. Prior to joining the AVP team, Tony worked for 12 years as Associate Director for Kids In Sports, managing all aspects of organizational administration, program design, community engagement, volunteer recruitment and fundraising. Tony holds a BA in Entrepreneurial Studies/Sports Management from Endicott College (Beverly, MA 1997) and a MEd in Education/Athletic Administration from Plymouth State University (Plymouth, NH 2009). He is also a 2013 graduate of the Center for Non Profit Management’s, Non Profit Leadership Development Program. For the last 10 years, Tony has worked as a certified volleyball official for numerous men’s and women’s college conferences, USA Volleyball and local Southern California high schools.

Marty Suan
Director of Programs

Marty has an extensive history in both indoor and beach volleyball internationally in Australia and overseas. He is the Co-Director of the Perth Beach Volleyball School in Western Australia as well as the Head Coach of Beach Volleyball in WA. The school has had tremendous success since its inception in 2009 with PBVS athletes having won 5 National Championships. Prior to this he spent time with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) as both an athlete and a coach. Marty has coached and played in over 70 FIVB World Tour Events, most recently he was the performance analyst for the Australian Men’s Team, Kapa/McHugh which finished 9th at the 2013 FIVB World Championships in Poland and won a bronze medal at the FIVB Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Austria 2014. Marty also holds an Australian Level 2 National Coach Accreditation.
