AVP Bally’s Chicago Open

Chicago is the favorite stop of many. Oak Street Beach is unlike any other venue with Lake Michigan’s natural sand and soft waves juxtaposed by the towering skyscrapers of Chicago’s iconic Gold Coast. Chicago is also traditionally the final Gold Series of the season, and the last chance our AVP athletes have of finishing the year with a W. 

With presenting sponsors CDW and Microsoft, The 2023 AVP Bally’s Chicago Open marked our 33rd year in Second City, and the best one yet.

Women’s Champions
Taryn Kloth & Kristen Nuss

The Women’s side featured some truly gorgeous volleyball, including an unforgettable 36-touch rally in the Finals. Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss did the same thing they did in 2022: they lost on Saturday afternoon and then came back to win three grueling Sunday matches to make the Finals. They took down their rivals, the #2-seeded Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng in a three-set Semifinal. Then they had a Chicago 2022 and Atlanta 2023 rematch against Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson. TKN once again came out on top, finishing the season as the best team in beach volleyball, surrounded by a sea of purple-clothed friends and  family who all celebrated with a group swim in Lake Michigan. 

Men’s Champions
Trevor Crabb & Theo Brunner 

Leading up to and throughout the weekend, it looked like Miles Partain and Andy Benesh would go three-for-three on AVP wins in our 40th year. But Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner snuck up on them, not dropping a single set and then beating the rising giants in straight sets in the Finals. In his Winner’s interview, Trevor said no one believed they could do it. While that may be an overstatement, he’s right in inferring that he and Theo overcame the odds by unseating the reigning AVP royalty and finishing the season as the Beach Volleyball Kings of Chicago.

EVENT PREVIEW

The Midwest tradition continues as Chicago hosts the 2023 AVP Bally’s Gold Series Chicago Open Presented by CDW and Microsoft. Beach volleyball’s best and brightest will battle to become the pride of Oak Street Beach.
