At the FIVB Shanghai Grand Slam this past weekend, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross had a 5th place finish after losing in the third round to Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas De Freitas, 21-19, 21-17.


The U.S. men’s teams that tied for 5th place were Phil Dalhausser / Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb / Casey Patterson. Dalhausser and Rosenthal fell to Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo, 15-21, 21-18, 15-11, who went on to win the tournament. Gibb and Patterson lost to Brazil’s Pedro Solberg Salgado and Emanuel Rego, 19-21, 21-15, 15-9.


There were a few 9th place finished for teams Emily Day / Summer Ross, Lauren Fendrick / Brooke Sweat, and on the men’s side John Hyden / Tri Bourne. Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena finished 17th.


The NORCECA tour was also in Guatemala this past weekend. Tealle Hunkus and Kim Dicello finished 3rd after beating Cuba’s Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez, 21-15, 21-17.


Heather Hughes and Christal Engle won the gold medal after beating Costa Rica’s Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro, 21-14, 24-26, 15-0. Hughes and Engle took the gold without having to finish the third set after Alfaro suffered a bee sting and was unable to continue.


On the men’s side, Will Montgomery and Stafford Slick lost to Cuba’s Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez, 21-17, 21-15, after beating other U.S. team Derek Olson and Kevin McColloch in the semi’s 19-21, 21-17, 19-18. Olson and McColloch fell short of the bronze medal losing to Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriquez and Erik Haddock, 21-14, 21-18.


The next event is the FIVB World Tour in Puerto Vallarta, May 6-11. The U.S. women’s teams competing are Jennifer Fopma / Whitney Pavlik,  Brittany Hochevar / Lane Carico and Christal Engle / Heather Hughes. The men’s teams playing in this event are John Hyden / Tri Bourne, Theo Brunner / Tood Rogers, Brad Keenan / John Mayer and Will Montgomery / Stafford Slick.
