Melissa Humaña-Paredes is one of the premier defenders in international beach volleyball, with a career defined by elite results on both the AVP and FIVB tours. Raised in Toronto, Melissa fell in love with volleyball at a very young age, growing up watching her father coach Mark Heese and John Child to an Olympic bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She went on to play indoor volleyball at York University, where she captained the team for three seasons, and was named York University Female Athlete of the Year in 2011 while graduating on the Dean’s Honour Roll. A longtime member of Team Canada, Melissa has represented her country since the age of 15 and in 2019, claimed the FIVB World Championship title! She has competed in multiple Olympic Games, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and most recently earning a Silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside partner Brandie Wilkerson.
Melissa made an immediate impact on the AVP Tour, winning the Manhattan Beach Open and Hawaii Open in her debut 2019 season, where she was also named AVP Defender of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. She and Wilkerson have consistently ranked among the world’s top teams, capturing titles across both AVP and FIVB competition. In AVP League play, Melissa has been a cornerstone athlete for the Palm Beach Passion in 2024 and 2025 AVP League seasons, and helped lead the team to a League Cup championship in 2025.
Off the court, Melissa is passionate about environmental action and sustainability, using her platform to advocate for ocean health, responsible consumption, and climate awareness. She actively supports initiatives that protect natural spaces and promotes more sustainable practices within sport and everyday life.
