The first of 2023’s three Gold Series events brought the heat, boasting triple-digit sand temperatures, play-disrupting lightning, and all the best teams in AVP pro beach volleyball. With more points and a bigger purse on the line, the 32 teams flew higher, hit harder, and groveled just a bit more for the title.
Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss were on a tear in ATL. Maybe they just love that stop – the heat reminds them of being back home in Louisiana. So many TKN fans made the drive to support them, and it’s the historical site of their first win as a team (and their first Main Draw as a team, too). They crushed everyone in their path, dropping zero sets and beating two of the top teams in the world (Melissa Humana-Paredes/Brandie Wilkerson and Sarah Sponcil/Terese Cannon. They defeated Melissa and Brandie twice, including a smoldering Finals scoreboard of 21-16, 21-12. (Photo Credit: A-Game Photography/Mpu Dinani)
Miles Partain and Andy Benesh earned their second win of the season, this time getting there undefeated. Their Final was interrupted by two lightning delays that lasted about 2 hours each, but when all was said and done (+6 hours!) Miles and Andy had won 21-13, 21-13. The 100 or so fans who waited out the storm in the covered parking garage were treated to literal courtside seats. Then Miles and Andy stayed for an extra hour, greeting every fan with hugs, pictures, and autographs until the sun set on the 2023 AVP Atlanta Gold Open. (Photo Credit: A-Game Photography/Mpu Dinani)

Sand Dump
How do we bring pro beach volleyball – and a beach – to the City in a Forest, ATL? It starts with hauling 900 tons of sand into Atlantic Station. That’s 50 dump trucks worth. The loose, soft white sand comes from southeastern Georgia, which has the very best in the region for volleyball courts.
After the big haul, the big spread happens next, making our three beach courts at Atlantic Station. We distribute 300 tons of sand per court, at 16”-18” before the courts are “beachified” and ready for the tournament. Following the 2023 Atlanta Open our sand will be given to local beach volleyball programs to supplement their courts, and for other local uses.
Night Sessions
